Google will reinstate advertising for drug and alcohol treatment centers on its U.S. search engine.
The change in policy begins in July, just ten months after the search giant suspended ads for such facilities last fall. That’s good news for drug and alcohol rehab center, addiction services and drug crisis hotlines.
Google plans to allow advertising for substance abuse treatment to appear on results pages — but with a catch. LegitScript, a company that checks the validity of online merchants including internet pharmacies and supplement sellers, first must approve the treatment center ads. An advertiser must apply for certification with LegitScript. If it is approved, the advertiser will then have to be certified by Google as well.
Following those approvals, treatment centers can then advertise on all AdWords channels. LegitScript predicts it will certify about 30 such providers during the first few months of the new program so it can get the process right, according to a statement on its website.
